Hooded Seal Mating Display

This is one of the bonkers animals I’ve ever filmed! The male hooded seal… he has an inflatable sack up his left nostril that he inflates to impress the ladies! It also makes a hilarious ‘boink’ noise when he waves it about! This one’s called Brian and is from a sequence I worked on for...

Polar Bear Aquatic Stalk

Polar Bear Aquatic Stalk

This is a clip from a sequence on polar bears aquatic stalking (hunting seals among the summer drift ice) I filmed for The Hunt (BBC, 2015). This was the first time a successful hunt had been captured on film for a landmark BBC series and it was an incredible thing to witness. Bears may appear to be cumbersome and a bit daft, but they are incredibly skilled hunters and can not only stalk through water without making a ripple but their final approach and lunge is often unsighted from underwater. Shot with a Cineflex V14.

I try not to repeat sequences I’ve shot as a rule… but when I was asked to go and film polar bears aquatic stalking in the drift ice around Svalbard for Disneynature I couldn’t resist giving it another go. I’m glad I did… I filmed this on day 2!

Walrus Falling from Cliffs

This is one of the most harrowing things I've ever witnessed. As the sea ice recedes north the walrus are forced to haul out on land to rest. When the beaches fill up they scramble up slopes to any space available often ending up on the top of sheer cliffs. And when they want to return to the sea...

Walrus Falling from Cliffs

This is one of the most harrowing things I've ever witnessed. As the sea ice recedes north the walrus are forced to haul out on land to rest. When the beaches fill up they scramble up slopes to any space available often ending up on the top of sheer cliffs. And when they want to return to the sea they simply don't understand the danger of the cliffs and walk off the edge innocently.

Polar Bear Cliff Climbing

This cliff climbing bear was one of the highlights of my first trip to Svalbard on my first shoot for The Hunt (BBC, 2015). Far from a starving desperate bear, as you can see from his ample ass, he knows exactly what he is doing and clearly targeted the cliffs when they were full of nesting...

Wolves vs Bison in Yellowstone - Life on Our Planet

This is very rare footage of wolves hunting bison in Yellowstone National Park from Episode 8 of Life on Our Planet. We got lucky waiting on the road in a spot where we'd seen a pack of wolves earlier... then a small herd of bison burst out of the treeline coming right at us with the pack in hot pursuit. Sadly the hunt was disturbed by a large number of vehicles on the road... but still incredible to see wolves and bison like this. Life on Our Planet is now showing on Netflix.
